Visitors Turn Out for Cal Poly Pier Tour
Spring Open House tour at the Cal Poly Pier enjoyed by all
The Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach is home to much of the research done by the Center for Coastal Marine Sciences.
The pier is a little more than a half-mile long. The next Open House event will take place Fall 2016.
More than 1,300 people attended the self-guided Open House tour of the Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach on Saturday, May 14, 2016.
The free event, which is put on by staff and faculty in the Center for Coastal Marine Sciences (CCMS), has grown into one of the largest events put on by the College of Science and Mathematics.
In addition to learning about the ongoing faculty marine research projects taking place at the pier, visitors were treated to a number of interactive displays, including touch tanks and the popular "discover SCUBA" experience.
“This event is certainly a team effort, and would not be possible without many people assisting in all phases — from preparation through clean up,” said pier operations manager Tom Moylan.
The Cal Poly Pier is home to much of the research done by CCMS and the San Luis Obispo Sea and Ecosystem Alliance. Since its donation to the university in 2001 by Unocal, now Chevron Corp., the pier has been used for classes and research activities and now hosts nearly 2,000 students each year.
The next Open House tour at the Cal Poly Pier will take place later this year.
