Noyce Math Scholars Attend Summer Workshop

The Cal Poly Math Department last month held a two-day workshop designed to train and provide support for future math teachers.
Now in its eighth year, the Math Noyce Scholars Workshop, part of the Robert Noyce Scholarship Program, has expanded to include two sessions during the summer. Forty-seven students from California, Arizona, Colorado, Montana and Utah participated in this year’s workshop.
“We have been fortunate to run a program at Cal Poly since 2007 and have received over $1.2 million in funding from the National Science Foundation,” said Elsa Medina, a math professor who directs the program along with professor Todd Grundmeier.
The goal of the workshop is to improve the scholars’ knowledge of teaching mathematics and to help prepare scholars for their first few years of teaching.

The selected students receive a $12,000 scholarship for their teaching credential program. In exchange, they agree to spend two years teaching in a high-needs school district.
Juniors and seniors with a GPA of 2.7 or higher may apply to the program. Scholarships are awarded to students entering their final undergraduate year or beginning the credential program at Cal Poly.
“We are proud to help place highly qualified mathematics teachers in high need school districts,” Medina said.
