SAN LUIS OBISPO – Phil Bailey, longtime dean of Cal Poly’s College of Science and Mathematics and professor in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, has been selected to serve as grand marshal of the university’s Open House-Poly Royal Parade on Saturday, April 8.

Bailey’s nearly 50-year tenure at Cal Poly began in 1969. To this day, he teaches at least one lab or lecture almost every quarter. Bailey is known for embracing student success and kick started the “25-35 Campaign,” in which students are encouraged to study 25-35 hours per week.

Bailey plans to retire at the end of the 2016-17 academic year. He then plans to manage Cal Poly’s Frost Program, which oversees funding for undergraduate research, granting of student scholarships, and the construction of the new Science and Agriculture Teaching and Research Complex. The new facility is designed to enhance student-faculty research and further the Cal Poly philosophy of Learn by Doing for years to come.

“I got involved in Poly Royal when I first came to Cal Poly,” Bailey said. “Over the years, I was the faculty advisor to the Chemistry Department’s Open House Committee, and we put on chemistry magic shows for more than 100,000 people. I’m pleased to be able to close out my career as grand marshal.”

Cal Poly’s 24th annual Open House will take place April 6-8. The event allows admitted and current students and their supporters, alumni, and the San Luis Obispo community to spend the weekend exploring and experiencing Cal Poly.

Cal Poly opens its campus to the public April 8 for the Poly Royal Parade, starting at 9 a.m. The parade kicks off at Grand Avenue and Perimeter Road and travels north toward Via Carta, ending at Dexter Lawn. Seating is available along the route.
